Waarom kijken we soms weg bij discriminatie of hebben we niet de juiste voelsprieten om het te herkennen? Hoe maak je solidariteit tastbaar? En hoe bouw je aan een samenleving waar iederéén zich veilig voelt? RITA (staat voor Report It Always) begon als meldplatform voor discriminatie en is uitgegroeid tot queer-initiatief dat zich inzet voor sociale veiligheid, inclusie en gelijkwaardigheid voor iedereen. De queer gemeenschap functioneert als de kanarie in de kolenmijn. Hun ervaringen met uitsluiting en moed laten zien wat er misgaat in onze systemen, maar ook hoe veerkracht eruitziet.

In dit boek onderzoeken verschillende bijdragers waarom onveiligheid nog altijd zo’n hardnekkig probleem is: op scholen, in bedrijven, in de zorg, de cultuursector en de politiek. En, belangrijker, wat we samen kunnen doen om dat te veranderen. Via persoonlijke interviews, gesprekken tussen bekende Nederlanders (queer en niet queer) en de 8 RITA Reminders biedt het boek praktische handvatten én nieuwe taal voor gelijkwaardigheid en solidariteit. De ruimte die we delen is een uitnodiging om deel te worden van een beweging. Het laat zien dat veiligheid geen eindpunt is, maar iets wat we elke dag samen vormgeven.

Why do we sometimes turn our heads when confronted with discrimination and how come we often lack the skills to recognise it? How can we make solidarity tangible? And how can we create a society in which everybody feels safe? RITA (an acronym for Report IT Always) started out as a reporting centre for discrimination and has grown into a queer-initiative that is committed to social security, inclusion, and equality for everyone. The queer community operates as the canary in a coalmine. Their experiences with exclusion and their courage show the systematic errors we face in our daily lives, but also what resilience looks like.

In this book multiple contributors investigated why safety remains such an abstract notion: in schools, companies, healthcare, the cultural landscape and in politics. More importantly, they investigated what measures need to be taken to change that. This book offers practical tools and helpful language to sustain equality and solidarity through personal interviews, conversations between prominent Dutch people (both queer and non-queer) and the eight RITA-reminders. The Space We Share is an invitation to become a part of the movement to show that safety is not an end-goal, but something we actively shape together every day.

RITA (staat voor Report It Always) begon als Nederlands meldplatform voor discriminatie en is uitgegroeid tot queer-community-initiatief dat zich inzet voor sociale veiligheid, inclusie en gelijkwaardigheid. RITA ontwikkelt trainingen, campagnes en tools om woorden om te zetten in daden. Zo lanceerde ze een community center in Amsterdam, dat in oktober 2025 feestelijk werd geopend door de burgermeester.
