Weer eens zo'n heerlijk boek om helemaal in te duiken: The Bee Sting van de Ierse schrijver Paul Murray, een tragikomische dikke pil over het gezin Barnes. Het familiebedrijf is in een crisis geraakt en sleept het hele gezin mee de afgrond in: vader Dickie, moeder Imelda, tienerdochter Cass en mijn favoriete personage PJ, het slimme buitenbeentje. Ieder heeft zo zijn eigen besognes en auteur Murray laat iedere stem klinken in het boek, waarbij het bijzonder knap is hoe hij zich inleeft in prepuber PJ. Tegen het einde worden de afzonderlijke verhalen steeds sneller afgewisseld om uiteindelijk samen te komen in een zinderende finale. Een fijn vakantieboek dat doet denken aan werk van Jonathan Franzen en A.M. Homes. Nu alleen nog in het Engels te lezen. Wie liever wacht op de Nederlandse vertaling heeft er een heerlijke kerstvakantie lang plezier van: De bijensteek staat gepland voor begin december.
