Titian – The Complete Paintings
Tiziano Vecellio, or Titian (c. 1488/90–1576), was one of the most influential painters in the entire history of Western art and Venice’s greatest artist. A sublime colourist and an artist of broad range, he was equally adept at portraits and landscapes, Christian stories and pagan myths. Titian was recognized as a genius early in his youth, while the work of his old age was unprecedented for its originality and power. He worked for prominent figures such as Emperor Charles V, Pope Paul III and King Philip II of Spain. Peter Humphrey’s essay and Vasari’s famous life of Titian are followed by an annotated colour catalogue of Titian’s complete paintings.
