In the early 1900s, Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) found his creative path in a return to a Classical concept – inspired by the archaism of pre-Classical Greece – which meant a search for an art of synthesis in which reason, harmony and proportion were the basic elements. His works, freed of any anecdote, stood well aside from the taste of the time and the passionate model imposed by Rodin and became a breaking point which opened the way to a renewal of the formal language of sculpture in the 20th century. The catalogue shows all his creative facets: sculpture, painting, drawing, engraving, tapestry and ceramics.
