Iwan Puni (1892-1956) is one of the eminent representatives of the russian avantgarde of the 20th century. The collection of Herman Berninger allows a first look at the whole range of his art. Thanks to the collector's tireless efforts many long forgotten works could be traced back and were rediscovered. Next to important pieces from Puni's early years the collection houses abstract reliefs and relief collages, type faces and cubist and suprematist compositions. The groups of work created during his stay in St Petersburg and as a scholar at the Vitebsk show Puni as a political engaged artist. The survey is completed by the late works from his time in Berlin and Paris since 1920. A special highlight of this catalogue are the photographs taken during the celebrations of the first anniversary of the Russian Revolution, an event that Puni's designs participated in. These pictures document a generation of artists brimming with Optimism to let their art be a part of social upheavals.
